CONSTITUTIONAL LAW - CML 1213

SYLLABUS
COURSE DESCRIPTION
CML 1213 is an introductory course through
which students will explore the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
["the Charter"]. CML 1213 will introduce students to the broad
range of Charter protected interests, except for legal rights at secs. 7-14
of the Charter (secs. 7-14 are studied in the criminal law courses).
Readings are assigned for each class according to the
schedule below. Students are expected to read the assigned materials prior
to the class indicated, and be prepared to discuss the materials in class.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. To familiarize students with the
structure and substance of the Charter;
2. To familiarize students with techniques of Charter interpretation;
3. To introduce students to the literature which expounds the Charter,
including case law and doctrine;
4. To introduce students to techniques and trends for identifying Charter
issues; and
5. To introduce students to factual and legal analysis which implicate the
Charter in legal problems.
EVALUATION
One take home, final examination, eight
hours in length, with a maximum submission of ten, typed (12 pt) double
spaced pages, will count for 100% of the final mark.
